In Dreams of Despair, (Lady of Darkness)
Brandy Slaven
Goodreads, Amazon
It's a...Reverse Harem
When light fades from dreams and darkness creeps in, what is left to keep them from becoming nightmares? Ali isn't so sure that she wants to find out. Tortured for several long years with dreams of despair, the time has come that the decision is no longer her to make. Thankfully, Ali isn't alone in her fight. The only question is, even with the assistance of Mel and her coven, plus several of Ali's own, very alpha, vampire mates, will it be enough? *This is a Reverse Harem novel with multiple mates. **Recommended age 17+ due to mature languages and situations.

Ali has had nightmares for as long as she can remember. Nightmares so real she has a hard time telling them from reality. She only has her best friend Jay to rely on to help her get through. Until his sexy friend comes in the picture. When Jay suddenly up and leaves, she has to rely on his friend to occupy her time. As if things in her life hadn't been strange enough already, she finds out that things aren't what they seem. What and who are real? Who can she trust? What happens when her past catches up with her?

First of all, if you haven't read of Death and Darkness recently enough to remember exactly what happened, do a reread before you start this one. You can find it here Of Death and Darkness. This will help you from being confused.

We don't start out with Mel and her coven. We actually don't see them until about a quarter of the way through this book. We focus first on Ali. It can be a little confusing b/c you aren't sure what is really happening, but it's supposed to be that way. Hang in there. Once Mel and her guys show up, things start to fall into place. Relationships start to build and the story line picks up with some action. Mel and Ali find themselves in a dangerous situation where even more secrets are revealed. The whole last chapter will have you saying "WHAT?!?!".

Overall, I enjoyed the characters and I liked the story line. It's got a lot of sweet moments, some hot moments, funny moments, and some super intense action moments. Unfortunately there was a very big DISLIKE for me. It's about the mate set up. I'm going to drop down below and post it b/c this is a personal no no for me and I don't want to spoil it for anyone who doesn't have this same issue.

****SPOILERISH**** DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW SPOILERISH DETAILS. YOU WERE WARNED.

Now I've said this before so it's no surprise to anyone. I like my main female to be it. She's the entire focus of the harem. They love her and only her. This book breaks that rule. Mel and Ali share a mate. They have zero jealousy between each other and that is mentioned several times. It's even stated that if it was another female besides the two of them, mated or not, it wouldn't be the same. That doesn't stop the jealousy and heartbreak that I feel. I can maybe see why Brandy did that, there's an extra connection there that is maybe needed. I feel like it could have been avoided though. There are plenty of available males in this book and I just don't see the need to take one already mated and match him up with someone else too. That's just me. This is obviously not an issue for everyone, I just thought it was worth noting.
