How many stars this book gets wasn't very hard to decide, it gets all of the stars! I will preface that statement to also say this one may not be for everyone, it is dark gritty and a bit taboo in its topics. This ARC definitely fell into the right lap though I very much loved every minute. 😍
So this starts off with Rex; Lark's current boo dumping her and leaving her with a lot of questions and unresolved issues. I'll give a little away and say this breakup has a lot to do with the situation Lark finds herself in, we are going to have a long and wild ride with Rex. I find him a very different complication to a plot than I'm used to. One second you want to kill him on Lark's behalf the next you are hearing the story from his mind frame and you just wish you could council him. Then you want to smack him again and get weird glory that something very uncomfortable is happening in his butt. But all of the relationship dynamics are complicated and messy, you have to understand a lot of what Lark goes through isn't like horrible torture but would never have happened under normal circumstances. I think there is a lot of room to grow and build on what events fully led each person involved to this exact moment. Some are innocent like Lark and her best friend, some knew what they were doing and others are just trying to make the best of a bad situation.
Lark herself is a very real character. There are moments where she is super strong and a survivor but also has moments where she wavers. Usually I'm way more attached to the female lead but I think that is why I enjoyed this so much because of how in depth this goes and still has room to grow in the next book. I've had it a week and already read it like three times, can't wait to see what happens next.
