Imposter, (The Royal Trials)
Tate James
Goodreads/a>, Amazon
It's a...Reverse Harem
Three trials. Three weeks. Three Royal Princes. It should have been an easy task, for a skilled mercenary like Rybet Waise. Simply break into the royal palace, and rescue her friend from the executioner's block. But when Rybet accidentally qualifies for the Trials, she finds herself with little choice but to see them through. A thin veil of etiquette, elegance and glamour hides the true nature of the Trials. Behind closed doors, they are brutal and bloody, and to fail means to forfeit her life. Thrust into the limelight and forced to compete with the Kingdom's elite sweethearts, unlikely allies emerge and bonds are formed. But someone will stop at nothing to see her fail. After all, she's nothing but a dirty pond-dweller. Rybet will do whatever it takes to survive until the Golden Ball, Princes be damned. ** IMPOSTER is book ONE of the ROYAL TRIALS trilogy, so does end with a cliffhanger. **

Imposter was originally part of the Once Upon a Harem series.
The series takes fairytale stories and twists them to fit into the reverse harem genre.
After reading this, I can't figure out which fairytale this is supposed to be.
But that doesn't matter.
This was a fantastic read.

In the blurb, you do get a warning about a cliffhanger.
What it doesn't tell you is how that cliffhanger will rip your heart out and leaves you wanting.
It's not a simple cliffhanger.
Oh no, it is very painful.
But I digress from that.

Imposter follows Rybet as she tries to survive The Royal Trials.
I don't want to give away too much.
But let's just say they aren't as easy as one would expect from royalty.

I love how the main female character is a strong, independent woman.
That she didn't turn to the traditional job for women.
How she used her size and abilities for something different.
Granted, it was still something bad, but I liked how she went about it.
She looks out for the other kids, the ones that were just like her when she was found.
Rybet doesn't just look out for herself, she takes it upon herself to help others.

The story did seem a little predictable to me.
I kind of figured out the whole storyline (at least what was solved by the end of the book).
I kept reading mostly to see if I was right.
That doesn't mean that it didn't hold my attention.
Because it did.

I would almost consider this a dark read.
Only because of how things turn out in the trials.
They are sinister, twisted, and deadly.
That's the only reason I would say that.
Everything else isn't so dark.

The royals and the tutors are characters you see a lot of.
The tutors more so.
Each perfect and insufferable in their own way.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story and I can't wait to see what will happen next.
The ending leaves a lot of things open.
As well as some of the things we learned along the way.

Highly recommend reading this book.
